Plant fall annuals. For sunny areas, try pansies, viola, ornamental cabbage and kale. For shadier areas, try cyclamen and primroses.

Fall is the time to plant spring blooming bulbs for that wonderful first show of spring that we all love! When you think of spring, daffodils (Narcissus) or maybe crocus come to mind, but there are many other bulbs for fall planting to bring gorgeous color to your spring garden. Some of these even have bloom times that extend into the early summer. These bulbs are originally from all parts of the world. Aren't we lucky that we can grow them here, too!
Preparing your soil for bulb planting is simple. Amend with Nicholson-Hardie Compost where you intend to plant your bulbs. As you dig each hole for the bulbs, add some bone meal to give them a good start. Each bulb, corm, rhizome or tuber requires a different planting depth. Follow the packaging instructions or ask one of us for help.
Following this preparation and giving your bulbs the sun/shade and watering that they require will bring you a vividly colorful spring garden.

The popularity of crotons in both indoor and outdoor plantings is increasing at a phenomenal rate. Native to tropical areas of Malaysia and southern Asia, these easy- growing plants have bright-colored foliage, often with many colors in one leaf. The uniqueness of these plants is their colorful glossy foliage in varying shapes and sizes.
Crotons are a small shrub and can reach a height of 2-6 feet. Some crotons can even be used as hedges or specimen plants. They also grow well in containers. The 6"-12" leaves are leathery and start out green, gradually changing color as the plant matures. They come in many shapes and a rainbow of colors including reds, pinks, yellows, rust, orange and even some purples, to name just a few.
Crotons are grown primarily for their brightly colored foliage. For this reason they need a fairly high amount of light to maintain their vibrant colors. Crotons prefer high humidity, full sun and moist, humus-rich but well-drained soil with a generous supply of organic material; we recommend Nicholson-Hardie Compost.
Crotons only require a moderate amount of watering on a regular basis. Keep them moist but not excessively wet. To maintain good growth, feed crotons regularly throughout the year with a water-soluble fertilizer. At Nicholson-Hardie, we stock a great selection of crotons just waiting to find a place in your home or garden. Stop by today to see what all the fuss is about!

Fall is an important time in the yearly cycle of your lawn. In order to maintain a deep green color going into winter, lawns should be fertilized now for optimum health. We recommend feeding all turf grass with Fertilome Winterizer or Nicholson-Hardie's 20-5-10 Lawn Food.
If you have a Bermuda or St. Augustine grass lawn, it's important to over-seed with annual or perennial ryegrass seed before your existing grass goes dormant and turns brown. Over-seeding in the fall months allows for the late heat to help germinate the fresh seed faster, allowing for new green grass to replace the dormant-going lawn.
We recommend over-seeding at the rate of 1 lb. per 50-100 square feet for best results. So don't delay. Get started today and enjoy a great looking deep green lawn all winter long!

Looking for an excellent rose that will bloom its head off for the fall season? The new Pink Double Knock Out® Rose is just as gorgeous as the original Knock Out® rose, only with intense hot pink double blooms. The blooms have twice the number of petals as regular Knock Out® roses, presenting a fuller, richer, traditional style rose flower that is simply breathtaking to look at.
The flowers maintain a continuous show of color from early June to hard frost, with beautiful foliage almost year round. The plants are compact and upright growing, with more winter hardiness and shade tolerance. Best of all, they thrive in very humid climates where most other roses need spray maintenance.
Pink Double Knock Out® roses are easy to grow, and adapt well to most growing conditions. We invite you to come in to the nursery and see these beauties in all of their full blooming glory while supplies last!
